Rolex watches are among the most treasured accessories in the world, and that is nothing new to the readers! There are several reasons why people value their Rolex watches more than their jewelry, and the reason is not just the brand. There are several components used in a Rolex watch which truly make it a piece of jewelry, and the most obvious one is the metal used in the construction of the watch.
In the first days of watch making, watches were considered an integral part of the jewelry business and watches were initially sold at leading jewelry stores around the world. Even today, some of the world’s best watch collections are available at jewelry boutiques and both the industries are juxtaposed to a great extent. A primary reason for that is the usage of precious metals in the constructions of watches, and that trend continues to date. Since watch making is a high precision industry, the materials used by the craftsmen should be able to take the tiny gradations and keep time to a great degree of perfection. The best metals there are gold, silver, and platinum, and today, most leading watch makers use these metals in the construction of their timepieces. While the obvious place we see the metal is in the casing, there is quite a bit of precious metal inside the watch too.
Then there are the jewels, which make sure that the components in the watch last for a real long time. For instance, when there are diamonds used in the construction of the watch – either inside the mechanism or on the watch face – we know that they will last us out! The prestige of the watch is indicated by the number of jewels mentioned, and we know for a fact that most great watch brands have multiple jewels used in the mechanism to lend a stability factor.
Coming back to the title of this article, and talking specifically about the models from the Rolex stable, there are a variety of precious metals in which watches are made and sold. While the most common metal is stainless steel, there is an infusion of precious metals including Silver, Gold, and Platinum to make the watch more durable and much more attractive. Then there are watches in which there is hardly any steel used; it is made almost entirely in gold. And talking about gold, we are no longer thinking ‘yellow’ when we speak about gold. In fact, most of the gold used in gold Rolex watches is not yellow gold, but white.
White gold is an alloy where there is a combination of gold with metals like Nickel and Palladium, which gives the gold a white sheen. While many confuse the color of white gold to burnished steel, the truth is far from it! The look and finish of white gold is significantly different from that of a high grade of steel and is easily distinguishable. The primary reason white gold is a preferred metal in Rolex watches is because of the softness of the alloy – it allows precious stones and other settings to sit in with ease, and holds them real well.
Rose gold is almost exclusively used in ladies gold Rolex watches, and it looks absolutely stunning. The effect is created by infusing copper into gold and depending on the percentage of copper used, the color changes from light pink to deep red. Rose gold (or pink gold) is also a metal of choice for urban man looking to buy Rolex watches in combination metals.
Platinum has come onto the popular watch metals list in the last few years, and there are a lot of top models of Rolex watches set in Platinum. Since Platinum is much rarer than gold, it is also that much more treasured. A Rolex watch set in Platinum makes for a stunning gift.
The good thing about Rolex watches is that most of the favorite models – from Oyster Perpetual to Submariner, from Daytona to AirKing – are available in multiple metal options. So depending on the choice of the metal, the customer can pick up the exact model he wants in the range he likes! Like we mentioned earlier, there are also combination watches, where the body is crafted by using two or more metals – like Steel and White Gold, or Platinum and Yellow Gold. These watches are the perfect add-on to the man (or woman) who wants it all!
