Color for a large dining room in an old house?

I just moved into a place with a lovely dining room that opens into the stairwell to upstairs. The former owner had it a dark, dark brick red, kind of like…rusty blood. I have medium to dark woodwork and wood floors, as well as a wood table and chairs, so needless to say the color has to look good with woodwork!

I like cool colors, but I realize they don’t necessarily “go” in a dining room. I have a kind of french country + vintage americana kind of thing going on, decor wise. The only things I have thought of are a deep, rich blue, but I am worried about blue in a dining room, or an actual red, like a nice spicy red, or even pink (like a dusty rose pink).

Suggestions, PLEASE!

Instead of taking a chance with a color you are not sure about, do not try and make a decision using tiny paint chip samples. Choose a high-quality brand that offers small bottles of color to sample, or invest in a single quart of a chosen paint color.Paint a piece of poster board instead of the wall, and after the paint has dried, place the extra-large sample on the wall in many different positions. Place the color next to flooring, next to window treatments, and next to master bedroom furnishings, and stand back to get a more realistic idea of how it will look on walls
