Slave Bracelets
What is this slave bracelet worth?
I have a slave bracelet that was found at a dig in Egypt years ago. It was handed down to me from my mother-in-law. My OBVIOUS question is: Is it worth anything? My other question is: Does anyone know who I could contact to find out more information? I would LOVE to know the history of this piece. By the way, my local museum could not help me.

Firstly the item in question is not Ancient Egyptian, not that you claimed it is; the decoration and material are very different from anything the Egyptians produced. If it is an antiquity of sorts, it comes well after the Pharaonic period of Egypt’s history. What is it made of? In one photo, it looks like a copper alloy, in the two others it looks silvery. It could even be plated by the look of the extracted pin, which instantly would identifies it as a fake. Either way, it is an ornamental peice of jewelry rather than a shackle, it’s decoration and construction being to delicate to restrain a captive. Does it have a Provenance – is it known where, when and by whom it was found? If not, the probability of it being modern are greatly increased. From the blur in the photos it is hard to see the construction details which give these things away immediately. For identification, you could try emailing relevent information (everything you know about the bracelet + photos) to the relevant department of one of the major museums – The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Oriental Instiute of the University of Chicago, The British Museum etc or try the Egyptological department of your nearest university. You could also try searches on Arabic Egyptian jewelry to try and find a match. Also, if you live in or near a major city, you could take the peice to an concervator or a large auction house for identification and valuation. The main Auction houses have proffesional valuers working for them. In Australia, where I live, there are Commonweatlh accredited valuers – certified by the government – I would imagine most contries would have a similar system. Perhaps look for valuers in the yellow pages.
