What rock/metal guitarists actually use their neck pickups other than slash of course?
What rock/metal guitarists actually use their neck pickups other than slash of course?
Well….. I do.
Some guitarists use *only* their neck pickup. I remember seeing at least one model of guitar that only has one neck pickup…. I thought it was the Jackson Soloist, but I just googled it, and I was wrong….
Randy Rhoads used his neck pickup a lot. Kirk Hammett. Most of the best guitarists use their neck pickup at least some of the time.
If you’ve never had a halfway decent neck pickup, it’s hard to understand why you’d want to – a few stock neck pickups I’ve had just really really blow. The decent ones (I’m thinking Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro – what Slash uses – or Pearly Gates or DiMarzio PAF Joe, or most any PAF really) give you an opportunity for nice fat sustained soloing or pristine cleans… or both even.
The neck pickup automatically has more volume and more output than the bridge pickup, so you can get away with using a lower output pickup and still have great volume balancing between the two. It’s a physics thing. *shrug*
Nah, I don’t know what I’d do if I could only use my bridge at this point. It’s taken me the better part of a decade to realize how bloody useful a neck pickup can be – I used to be a bridge pickup only user, too! I think it’s partly because I haven’t had good neck pickups to work with, and partly because I just haven’t known how to use them properly.
Neck pickups (esp low output ones) have a lot of dynamic range – combine that with the potentially huge warm and fat tone, and it’s a no-brainer.
