With the holidays just around the corner, the invitations will soon start rolling in for all kinds of social events. From casual family dinners to glitzy New Year’s Eve bashes, your wardrobe is going to be stretched to its limit in putting together those perfect holiday outfits.
Except for those tongue-in-cheek “Ugly Holiday Sweater” parties, you will want to keep the overtly-themed outfits to a minimum. That doesn’t mean that for casual get-togethers you can’t show your holiday spirit with an “I Believe” tee or a cute jingle-bell bracelet. Stay comfy but festive with flats and clogs accented with rhinestones or embroidery, which give a bit of flair when paired with a corduroy mini-skirt and tights or leggings. And brave those winter-wonderlands in faux-fur trimmed sweaters, coats and vests.
The holidays are all about sparkle and shine. Bring a festive touch to a cocktail party with a metallic-sequined tank top under a satin blazer, or with a cashmere cardigan sprinkled over the shoulders with shimmery beads or sequins. Channel your inner Dorothy with slippers in a glittery red, or for New Year’s, in silver and gold.
For dressier parties, a satin black cocktail dress will carry you from conservative office holiday party to New Year’s Eve at the hottest club in town. Just add basic pearls, a silk wrap and peep toe pumps for the work function, but switch them out for rhinestones and sky-high strappy heels for the social scene. For something splashier, sequins and metallics are the name of the game even for a formal holiday. Just remember that “less is more” with these outgoing materials if you want to avoid looking more like a disco ball than a society darling. If you prefer more low-key fashion statements, then you’re in luck. Popular colors this season are gray and dark purple, which look fabulous and classic in seasonal satins, velvets and silks.
A great feature of the holidays is getting carte blanche to channel your inner girly-girl. What other time of year can you wear heels with big satin bows on them and look more like Carrie Bradshaw than Little Bow Peep? Put away your basic black and brown sensible shoes and splurge on those patent leather red heels. This is also the time for pom-poms, both furry ones on the end of your coat draw-strings or dangling in colorful wools from the ends of your scarf. Another big trend for this holiday are feminine and flattering cowl-neck tops and dresses. When wearing this style, forego a necklace for a pair of chandelier earrings to create a classic and stunning look.
From comfy to formal, from classic to trendy, the holidays are the time of year we really get to sparkle and shine. So when holiday shopping for friends and family, be sure to pick up a few things for yourself at a women’s fashion boutique to ensure you look fabulous at all those festive events just around the corner.
