Recreating The Punk Look
Punk hairstyling began its life in the UK in the 1970s. Such hairstyles were mainly gel spiked, Mohawk or Mohican shaped, just like the Apache Indians and exaggerated with loud colors. By the 1980s, these hairstyles had become very popular as many musical artists began to adopt these looks on stage. The punk look had a rebellious nature and became common amongst teenagers who either rejected the conformist society or wished to express their individuality and stand out from the crowd.
Fast forward to today, we can see how the punk look has grown up and found itself a place in hairstyling history. The punk hairstyle has become extremely fashionable nowadays and does well to promote that modern look. These types of hairstyles have highly visible characteristics which classify the hairstyle as punk, such as the style, cut and color.
Style
- The style is usually the first and most obvious identity of this look, whether it is Spiked, Mohican or Mohawk shaped.
Cut
- The cut can have many variations but has to extend beyond the realm of normal hairstyles to be associated with the punk look.
Color
- The color of punk hair is usually a streak of wild color or a combination of unnatural colors like blue, green, yellow, orange etc.
The combination of these elements has given hairstylists even greater scope for creativity, allowing them the ability to create variations of these styles and make bold hairstyling statements without offending. Such hairstyles can be seen on the models of the catwalk as the look is quite captivating under lights. Punk hair styles have been popular among celebrities too, like Gwen Stefani, Pink, Amy Winehouse and Vivienne Westwood to name just a few.
The punk look is here to stay and definitely the look to go for, if you wish to stand out from the crowd.
