What is gold really worth? (or other precious ores)?

I know it is rare and not easy to come by that is what it’s worth is. But gold itself is pretty useless for day to day use. You can’t eat it or ride it, who care if you can melt it down into jewelery, jewelry serves no purpose. The only thing gold is worth is to spend it on something useful or use it to pay off debt or your mortgage. Really I think it is the human greed and their lust for power and shiny things. Because of I was given a bar of gold and was told I couldn’t spend it I’d chuck it off a cliff, for it would be useless to me if I can’t spend it.

I know we need gold or else we would resort to a barter system. Because lets face it, no one will work for free and with the thought they are working to help societies needs and themselves. And no one can stand the thought of selling something without getting something in return, whether it be money or goods.

It is an excellent conductor, and because it does not tarnish it is useful in electronics, for example as a coating for connecting plugs. Just off the top of my head, I know they use it in recombinant genetics. It has tons of uses, really. But the shiny thing is great, too. I wish it were more common; it would probably aid in decorating. It is nice to have a pretty place to live; it helps keep you happy.
