Are China’s “National Minorities” Considered Less Advanced?
I am having trouble understanding the Chinese idea of autonomous minority nationalities. Specifically, how do the Han Chinese majority see their own relationship with these minorities? I am thinking specifically of Uighurs, Tibetans, Miao and Chinese Khazakhs.
Some Chinese have told me that all nationalities in China are a “harmonious whole”. If that is how they see it, then what do they see these nationalities’ “autonomy” consisting of?
Do Han Chinese see these cultures as less developed than theirs or as equal cultures? Do they consider themselves as having a responsibility to help these cultures advance? Do they think that interaction with these cultures can help their own culture advance?

Jenny2pa, thanks for your short but thoughtful answer. How are they autonomous, though?
Not really. It’s just that China is consist of mostly Han and it’s hard to see another ethnic being a part of yours when you hardly see any of those people. In fact, I’ve seen a lot of Han Chinese who appreciate the other Chinese ethnics. They even tried to represent them more and wears their traditional costume in special events.
