What would be a good guitar for a two man blues punk band?
I am in a two man band that plays blues punk or garage rock stuff and was wondering if anyone knew what a good guitar for that would be. Something with a full heavy sound. Any suggestions?
Les Pauls are a classic choice but be aware that they weigh a lot, which might get uncomfortable if you don’t have a wide padded strap. They also tend to be muddy on the neck pickup. For years Seymour Duncan has been pushing low output pickups like the SH2n jazz which is very clear and bright for that reason. SGs are lighter weight and sound better on the neck pickup than LPs. The bridge pickup sound is a bit ruder without a maple top. The jaguar/jazzmaster idea is cool looking. Jags are rather thin sounding for your sort of music except for the ones with humbucker pickups. Jazzmasters and jags with trems do not usually sustain well. Telecaster deluxes are worth a look because they have Fender’s humbuckers which are fatter sounding than most Fenders but more articulate than Gibsons or Epiphones. And Eastwood makes a lot of off the wall models that look cool and have unique voices. Whatever you try out listen to the guitar through a clean amp first. If it sucks played clean, distortion won’t fix that. See how the neck feels and test the tones. Different pickups change the sound as do different tone woods. Find something that feels and sounds good to you. And get the best sounding amp you can, something that gives as much definition to the sound as possible unless you want to sound trashy on purpose. It’s your musical voice so speak with the one that suits you.
