Where should i surf in Hawaii and what board should i use?
Im going to hawaii in january and want to know where the best surfing is on maui. Ive been to the islands 9 times and 6 times to maui but im learning to surf. Im 14 years old 5 foot 7 seven and 135 pounds but i dont want a longboard plus what are the good spots to surf on maui thanks
Learning to surf at 14- stick to the beach where you are staying. The surf in Hawaii is wonderful almost everywhere.
The only problem would be to overmatch yourself too soon.
There are instructors in almost every hotel, so the concierge should be able to set you up right where you are- that means you will not have to waste time driving all over before you hit the waves.
And the more wave time the better you will become. (Don’t forget to stay hydrated- surfing is high energy activity)
By using the boards the instructors provide, you will not be faced with a board on the plane/ car…
And since conditions vary, chances are the board you start with in Hawaii will not be the one you use the next time.
Since you won’t be traveling until January – lucky you to winter in Maui!!- you might want to spend some time checking the tides etc at the beaches where you;’ll be staying. That will give you an idea of which beaches you might prefer.
If you can get a balance board- a round board with a ball at the center- fitness places and rehab have them- that is a great way to increase your surfing skill. You just stand on it- it is harder than it seems -once you master standing still, you work on balance at different postures
