why do cops hand cuff you with your hands behind your back ?

and not in front of u?

Handcuffing behind the back offers many advantages-
- The suspect can’t see their hands or the cuffs so anything (i.e. lock picking, hiding contraband, etc) must be done by feel.
- Arms secured behind the back have much LESS range of motion to do anything such as throwing contraband, grabbing a weapon, etc.
- If the suspect gets a weapon it would be harder for them to use it, especially a firearm.
- The suspect can’t use their arms for climbing, crawling, etc to escape.
- The suspect can’t swing their arms, punch, or put their arms around the officer’s throat to choke them.
- Allows “hog-tying”, which is a form a hobbling where the suspect’s legs are bent at the knees, tied together, and strapped to the cuffs. This prevents them from kicking officers, windows, or other items. It also makes it somewhat easier to transport a struggling suspect over terrain, stairs, etc for short distances.

Also-
- Having the suspect facing away from the officer for cuffing behind the back, especially if in a fight, is safer and easier than having them face-to-face. Having them facing away allows the use of certain joint locks, limits spitting/biting, limits the suspects vision of the officer, limits the suspects range of motion for striking the officer, and allows the officer to bend the suspect over at the waist. Also hand cuffing behind the back doesn’t require the officer to reach around to the front of the suspect.
