is green turquoise more valuable than blue?
What makes the green color
It depends. American Turquoise comes in both colours and is considered the finest in the world. True blue turquoise from Arizona is very desirable and supplies are not as plentiful, so it can be more expensive. Some green turquoise comes from American mines and is as desirable as the true blue turquoise. The finest Arizona blue turquoise is a semi precious gemstone and the prices reflect its rarity and beauty. Chinese turquoise is almost always green or has a slight yellowish cast, it is not dyed, but it has never been as desirable as American turquoise. It’s a bit duller in colour because of the yellow cast and has a waxy look no matter how it is polished, while Arizona turquoise can be polished to a brilliant shine. All this is due to the molecular structure of the mineral. There are many forms of turquoise depending on the molecular composition.
Having said that, many blue turquoises in costume jewelry and the beads stores are not true turquoise. Much is dyed howlite, dyed Chinese turquoise, or stones that have had a variety of treatments including irradiation. It’s difficult for the lapidarist to tell real from fake, and very difficult for the casual jewelry buyer.
