why there is a difference between free space and file size in my hard-disk?

I am having some problems because my partition C of my hard disk is too small. I tried to search for programs or files which I could move to the second partition D but I found something very funny: If I check the size of the free space of the disk I get 3.8 out of 20 GB, if I add the size of the files inside then I get about 8.4 GB (with option see hidden files selected). Why is this difference?

WIndows usually reserves a certain amount of hard drive space so it can create swap files for when you run applications, Play games, download temp files etc etc. This space that has been reserved will vary depending on your hard drive space.
