Equetus lanceolatus Jack-knife

Equetus lanceolatus Jack-knife

$79.99

The Jack Knife Fish, Equetus lanceolatus , is a very unique looking fish. They have an elongated dorsal fin. The Jackknife has a black line that runs vertically down their snout which fades as the fish matures. A black band runs vertically through both eyes, followed by two more black bars, one running through the pelvic fins and one beginning at the tip of the dorsal fin and extending to the tip of the caudal fin. They require large areas to swim and need caves or caverns in which to hide if they feel threatened. The natural diet of Jackknifes is invertebrates and small fish if they can catch them. That being the case they should be housed in fish only aquariums with fish large enough not to fit into their mouth. When first introduced into the aquarium they may need to be enticed with live food such as ghost shrimp and then slowly weaned to frozen food such as clam, shrimp, and squid. This species is very delicate and should only be purchased by experienced aquarists.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Scaled Groundcuckoo (Neomorphus squamiger) is a species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family. It is endemic to the Amazon Rainforest near the Tapajos River in Brazil, but much confusion exists over the exact limits of its range and the features useful for separating it from the very similar Rufousvented Groundcuckoo (the breastmarkings of the Amazonian taxa are known to vary clinally). Consequently, it has often been considered a subspecies of the Rufousvented Groundcuckoo. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Scolopsis bilineata Bridled Monocle Bream - Juvenile

Scolopsis bilineata Bridled Monocle Bream – Juvenile

$39.99

As a juvenile, the Bridled Bream ( Scolopsis bilineata ) has a white belly and a black and yellow striped dorsal half. As the fish matures, the stripes blend to solid grey and a black-edged white band develops form the eye to the dorsal fin. Light colored stripes develop on the head. Breams are related and similar to Snappers and Fusilier and are usually found more in the open water or higher in the water than many other aquarium fish. The adult fish is often very different in coloration and even shape than juveniles, and many grow too large or active for most home aquariums. Although not as predatory as their cousins, Breams may still prey on small fish and invertebrates like shrimp and crabs. Most will not eat or disturb corals and sessile (stationary) invertebrates. Most of these fish also grow very large and need a very large aquarium with ample filtration to accomodate them.

(2009), while confirming the overall phylogenetic pattern, instead opted for maintaining the woodcreepers as a separate family, while splitting the ovenbirds (as traditionally defined) into two families, Furnariidae and Scleruridae. Phenacogrammus interruptus Congo Tetra - Small

Phenacogrammus interruptus Congo Tetra – Small

$6.99

The Congo Tetra is a beautiful fish that displays a rainbow of irridescent color and elaborate fins. Juveniles are plain silver fish. As they mature, males develop long dorsal fins and long caudal fins with elaborate extensions that project out from the middle. The fins are tipped in white and ripple gracefully as they swim. The upper body is irridescent green to blue, with a copper to gold horizontal band below it. The lower body is irridescent green to silver. Females do not develop the long fins, and generally have duller coloration. They are a schooling fish that should be kept in groups of 6 or more. Congo tetras are stunning fish that will add color and activity to most community aquariums. They are larger tetras, and may sometimes chase very small fish, but are otherwise peaceful. Unlike most other tetras, these fish are native to Africa. They prefer a pH that is close to neutral, but can be comfortably be kept in alkaline water as well. Congo tetras will accept most flake and pelleted foods. They also benefit from the occasional treat of frozen brine shrimp and blood worms. Provide plenty of free swimming space, as well as some sheltered areas using plants, driftwood or other decorations.

Baryancistrus chrysolomus (L047) Mango Pleco - Medium

Baryancistrus chrysolomus (L047) Mango Pleco – Medium

$49.99

Mango Plecos have a greenish to black colored body with yellow to orange edged fins. The dorsal and tail fin have a thicker yellow band than the pectoral and pelvic fins. Mango plecos are also referred to as magnum plecos. They grow to be almost a foot in length, so they are not suited for smaller aquariums. They eat algae and small invertebrates. In the aquarium, they will accept frozen meaty foods, sinking pellets and fresh greens. They are a peaceful fish, and can be a great addition to most larger community aquariums. Being primarily nocturnal, this fish will require hiding places such as rock crevices, driftwood, and other decor.

Tropheus duboisi - Juvenile

Tropheus duboisi – Juvenile

$14.99

As juveniles, Tropheus duboisi are black with white speckles all over their body. As they mature, the spots fade and they develop a wide, white (Burundi) or yellow band and a blue head. These fish are hardy, but complex, and must be housed properly for success. Tropheus are extremely aggressive with other tropheus. It is best to keep just one in a tank full of other tough Tanganyikans, or as a large colony in a very large tank. New Tropheus should not be added to a colony once established. These fish should be fed exclusively vegetable matter. They will pick algae off of rocks and love spirulina flake and wafers. They should be given supplemental treats like lettuce, spinach or cucumbers frequently. Be sure to stick to this diet, and avoid meaty foods, as Tropheus are infamous for catching Malawi Bloat. These fish are maternal mouthbrooders, meaning the female holds the eggs and fry in her mouth for protection.

Gyrincocheilos aymonieri Chinese Algae Eater

Gyrincocheilos aymonieri Chinese Algae Eater

$2.99

The Chinese Algae Eater is one of the most commonly seen algae eaters in the aquarium hobby. Despite the name, however, these fish are not true algae eaters and require a diet of both meaty and vegetable foods. The sucker-like mouth is actually an adaptation for maintaining a grip on rocks in the fast flowing waters from which it originated. They also use this mouth to rasp algae from the surface of rocks, glass, and plants. They will also scavenge extra food from the bottom of the tank. As Chinese Algae Eaters get older they favor a more carnivorous diet and can become more aggressive. They can especially be a problem with long finned or delicate fish. The body is brown on top and white on the bottom with a broken black band that runs horizontally down the flanks of the fish.
