Jewelry Making in Modern Day Society
Jewelry making in modern day society is very different from what is was a hundred years ago. Traditionally jewelry as we think of it is made with expensive metals and rare gems. When someone mentions the work jewelry people often think of what is sold in fancy jewelry stores and what they see in glass cases; the kind of place you would go to buy an engagement ring or tennis bracelet. But jewelry today lends itself to a variety of materials. People, especially crafters, create lovely items of jewelry from materials no more complicated than some yarn and thread. If you are interested in making jewelry at your home or in a studio, consider exploring the non-traditional materials and prepare to be surprised by the many discoveries you will make.
Jewelry is often considered to be a body adornment, something to be worn to accentuate certain feature or something to liven up your wardrobe. But, that doesn’t mean the jewelry item needs to be something flashy. Work with materials that will offer contrast in color, texture or patterning. Fabrics and beads are excellent choices and generally both are fairly inexpensive. Most people could probably find a bit of both in a craft bin in their closet or a junk drawer. Explore other materials as well, such as paper, glass, resin, plastic and things found in nature. Next time you take a trip to the beach collect a few pebbles, shells or sand-worn glass and make something with it when you get home.
We are in the post modern age where anything goes. Take cues from the fashion industry where clothing is inspired by all different eras, fabrics, textures and colors. It is the same with jewelry in modern day society. This is a great time in history for the creative mind. So get out those craft bins and start making extraordinary body adornments that are sure to be the envy of your friends. Who knows, maybe you’ll even get requests to sell them at a local boutique so your beautiful creations can be made available to others. The world is your oyster and yours may just have a pearl in it.
