Opal Jewelry, A Living Stone
A woman’s best friend is jewelry. Wearing on jewelry with the corresponding birthstone is not only a trend but has certain emotions attached to it. Opal jewelry in particular has its own advantage. Opal is the birthstone for October and the gemstone given to commemorate a 14th wedding anniversary. The word “Opal” for this dynamic gemstone was derived from the Greek word “opallios” which means to see change in color. Opal’s ability to refract and reflect specific wavelengths of light makes it so special. In fact, there are more than a dozen varieties of fiery and iridescent opals.
What is an Opal?
Opal is found near the earth’s surface where ancient geothermal hot springs exist ,which is a non-crystallized silica. Romans called the magnificent gemstone “Cupid Paederos,” meaning a child as beautiful as love.Flash of lightening were considered to be the source of Opal which then fall to earth.Hope ,happiness and truth are considered to be related with Opal.
Opal’s multi colors gives it a beautiful appearance.
The fire in opal jewelry gives an enchanting look. Opal has a mixture of black and white colors with one of them being dominant. Opals have a unique look and beauty, making them a very interesting birthstone with a strangely exquisite appearance.
Beliefs and Cultures:
The stone is considered to have eyesight strengthening abilty and is believed to watch over royal families, hence is known as “Eye stone” by many cultures of the 14th century. Its fire is said to have all the colors of the rainbow and other gems and it thus know as the “king of gems “. Owing to their appearance and power ,opals made the monarchs of ancient time to treasure them. Opals were routinely set into the crowns and necklaces of rulers who believed the protective powers of the gemstones would ward off evil. It is believed to bring bad luck by certain people.

A dark body tone compared to a white opal- Black Opal.
Light body tones ,also known as ‘milky opal’- White Opal
Very dark and beautiful in color – Boulder Opal.
Crystal Opal – any opal with a transparent or semi-transparent body tone. Black crystal and white crystal are the forms of crystal opal
Fire Opal – an American term meaning any opal that displays a significant amount of red coloring. Mexican fire opal is a different kind of opal, which displays orange coloring.
Opals are also been linked to purity, hope and innocence. Opal is a “living” stone. We must protect them from heat and detergents that dry the gem. Hence, avoid wearing on opal jewelry while doing household tasks. Opals develop crazing if they are allowed to dry out. Hence, keep away from sunlight and any possible chemical contacts. Jewelry cleaning products must be avoided. To clean opal, simply wipe it with a clean, soft dry cloth such as silk or cotton. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, chemicals, or toothpaste when cleaning opal jewelry. Generally you do not want to immerse opal jewelry in water. Opal is a treasure all by itself. Hence, treasure them with utmost care.
