I read it when I was younger. It has some kid who leaves his tribe (I think in the South Pacific), canoes to some island, lives there for a while, I think he gets a bracelet or necklace of bones to make his dad proud or something, and at the end runs into cannibal inhabitants of the island who chase him in canoes.
